Grade examination regulations

This regulation governs kyu and dan grade promotion: competition kata, scoring, championship formats, and — its main body — the composition, powers and examination procedure of the Commission Nationale des Grades (CNG), which awards dan grades in judo. Its scope also names the aikido dan, but the text contains no aikido-specific grading rules of its own: those sit in a separate chapter, covered by the aikido page. It binds candidates for promotion, the CNG and its examination juries, and the instructors who award the lower kyu grades.

Dated August 2020, it is reproduced in full inside the Sporting and Organisational Code. The five recognised kata are Nage-no-kata, Katame-no-kata, Kime-no-kata, Kodokan Goshin-jitsu and Ju-no-kata. The CNG has at least three senior-graded members; 1st through 6th dan are awarded by examination, 7th dan is honorific via the African Judo Union, and 8th dan and above via the IJF.
