National championships, since 1969

The first Tunisian judo championship open to all weight categories was held in Tunis in 1969, bringing together twenty-nine judoka from several clubs, travelling from Tunis, La Marsa and Sfax. In the final, Abdellatif Bouali (SRS) defeated Ezzaier Maamer (Judo Club Mochizuki) to become the first Tunisian open-category champion, in a bout refereed by Mohamed Hachicha. That same year, Judo Club Mochizuki won the first Tunisian team championship, held at the federal hall on rue Kamel Ataturk.

National competition became increasingly structured in the years that followed: Mohsen Mahjoub won three consecutive national titles between 1973 and 1975, before Ezzair Abdellaziz (EST) took the title in 1976, defeating Abdessalem Besbés (CSS), the 1972 champion.

Weight-category championships, since 1974

From 1974 onward, the Federation organised the first individual Tunisian championships broken down by weight category for boys, held at the El Menzah dome — a shift to category-based competition that brought the discipline into line with international standards.

The Tunis International Tournament, since 1978

The Tunis International Tournament held its first edition in 1978, with the participation of Morocco, Spain, Yugoslavia and host nation Tunisia. The tournament specifications and the International Judo Federation refereeing rules together govern how these competitions are organised.

African Championships and the Grand Prix de Tunis

Tunisia has hosted the African Championships on four occasions — 1968, 1994, 2004 and 2018, the last of these staged at the El Menzah Sports Palace. The country has also staged three editions of the Grand Prix de Tunis, a stop on the International Judo Federation circuit, which drew as many as 335 judoka from 46 nations at its 2018 edition.
